VANILLE & MARILLE – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
At first, I cursed the opening of an ice cream store right by our home. After changing my route for 3 weeks I decided to embrace the delicious 100% naturally flavored ice cream. What I love most about it is the stoop scene it has created. The store is not much bigger than a hole in the wall so families perch precariously on a few little benches on the sidewalk as well as the stoops next door. Flavors are excellent and the Belgian chocolate is by far my favorite. Rich, dark and creamy. They also have a flavor of the month which gets interesting. Cones and cups are available and toppings are limited to sprinkles. If one scoop isn’t enough you can also pick up a tub to go.
PRICE – 1.20 a scoop
TOILET – Nope
SEATING – A long wobbly bench outside.
PLAY AREA – Apart from the pavement outside no. There is, however, a small park just 2 blocks away and Gorlitzer park with a playground and petting zoo one block North.
EIS MANUFAKTUR – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
I know this place has some die hard fans because I read the reviews. Personally, I loved the “Milch and Honey” and Oscar gets the “Sorbet Indisches Mango”. A strange choice for a child but he is part Thai and it’s about as close we are going to get to those juicy mangos right now. This is a bit more of cafe set up with coffee and drinks and seating inside including complementary water which I personally think should be available in all ice cream shops. Outside is the place to be though. The double width sidewalk is home to an eclectic mix of tables, chairs, and benches where kids and adults hang out and enjoy the world go by.
PRICE – 1.30
TOILET – Yes
SEATING – Yes
PLAY AREA – Nothing here. For the closest park take a right all the way down Bockstrasse.
ISABEL – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
This place ticks a lot of boxes. The first thing worth mentioning is that a child scoop is 0.5 euros. I have not found a cheaper children’s scoop in town and there has been no compromising on flavor either. Isabel has been in business since 1998 and it’s easy to see why. The ice cream comes in two tears, delicious and extra delicious ‘premium line” with flavors like Fior di Latte Classico, Expresso Chip ( LOVE this) and Goats milk dark chocolate. At 1.50 a scoop, the premium line is great value anyway. The location is prime, with a large shaded seating area facing the park and a beautiful inside space serving cakes and drinks. I particularly love the illustrated murals here.
PRICE – 0.5 for a kiddy scoop
TOILET – YES
SEATING – YES plenty, indoor and outdoor
PLAY AREA – There is a small selection of baby and toddler toys in the cafe and a giant park just over the road.
ICE ROBOT Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
I know this may strike you as utterly ridiculous but there is a real high point to this place. Yes, the computerized ordering system and groovy robot delivering your food are cool BUT the topping situation here is major. I won’t ruin it with pictures, you honestly have to see it to believe it. Fruit, nuts, marshmallows, sauces, creams, sprinkles, crunches, biscuits and even hot fudge. Brilliant. This all comes at a cost though. 3 Euros. If money is no object then hit this place hard. Oscar loved the robot but was actually less enthusiastic about the cup ice cream. He likes waffle was his exact response. A waffle is German for a cone. He’s a quick learner when he wants to be.
PRICE – 3.00 a cup
TOILET – YES
SEATING – YES plenty, indoor and outdoor
PLAY AREA – Not one that I could see but admittedly we sat outside and I didn’t ask. It is, however, a short 10-minute walk to Berlins famed Monbijou park and pool.
KINDERBAR Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
Ok, this is a no frill whole in the wall cafe that serves ice cream and waffles. It’s so fantastically located though I couldn’t not include it in the mix. Flavors are simple and limited and 0.90c which is brilliant. Sprinkles come in blue only and are grudgingly given but what the hey, it’s the spot that matters in this case. The adjoining park to Kinderbar is everything so if you’re looking to burn off that sugar buzz this is the place.
PRICE – 0.90 for a scoop
TOILET – YES
SEATING – YES indoor and outdoor
PLAY AREA – Yep, a giant park.
CUORE DI VETRO Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
This is my top flavor spot. The texture of the ice cream here was just phenomenal. Great cafe and lots of outdoor seating. This spot had a winding line at 3:30 pm on a Tuesday. I think it might be a winner. The staff here were also THE FRIENDLIEST in Berlin. That is honestly a big compliment. German service industry standards are not quite there yet in terms of friendliness. In case you were wondering the pistachio really is as good as they say it is.
PRICE – Ugh I don’t know, I forget, it was that good.
TOILET – YES
SEATING – YES indoor and outdoor
PLAY AREA – Didn’t see anything indoors but there is a great kids playground at the end of the road. Not much shade here though just FYI.
EISMANN AT MAUERPARK – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
Yet again a bit of a novelty factor but the show is pretty funny when it’s not you in line. I thought the rather small scoop was a little pricey and they only have chocolate or vanilla but the flavor is really unique, you can really taste the creamy, dairy flavor.
PRICE – 2.00 for a rather small yet tasty scoop
TOILET – There are porta potties at the market
SEATING – YES technically you could go and sit with the other food vendors
PLAY AREA – Although this is in the middle of the flea market area on a Sunday, there is a children’s park in the park itself.
HOKEY POKEY – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
This very popular ice cream parlor in Prenzleurberg has some great tasting flavors and a large variety of toppings. The interiors are really nice but ice cream is a little on the expensive side. I know a lot has been written about this place and yes the namesake Hokey Pokey ice cream was great this just wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Plus it was super annoying that there was no toilet. If your potty training a toddler like I am, this sucks! Maybe I need to come back another time to fully appreciate the flavor I don’t know. I’m sure I will.
PRICE – 1.80
TOILET – NO. Why? Does anyone know…?
SEATING – There is a small seating area indoors and some long benches outside. Considering how crowded the place gets its not an ideal set up. The ice cream all over the sidewalk is pretty gross too.
PLAY AREA – Not unless you like picking sticky ice cream up off the sidewalk?
ANNA DURKES – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
What I loved about this place is the cool interior. The upholstered seating area was unique and I like that. The ice cream is delicious and the pistachio so so good. This is a must visit spot. You can pop along to Eismanufaktur when you’re done! Seating outside is really nice. It was good to see a table again at an ice cream spot.
PRICE – 1.20
TOILET – YES
SEATING – Great upholstered seating area indoors and lots of tables and makeshift benches outside.
PLAY AREA – Not only the sidewalk which does almost always have a playful bunch of kids outside. This is a neighborhood location so the atmosphere is pretty relaxed.
GELATERIA TOSONI – Best Berlin Ice Cream spots
Honorary mention to Gelateria Tosoni not just for its fantastic Gelato but also for its Ice Cream coffee’s. I have made several trips here just for this special. I also love the shady courtyard and mini – me bench. This is a large cafe on a beautiful tree lined street with plenty of little shops to explore in the hood. Being set back from the street gives it a special relaxed vibe and extra safe room for some running around for the kiddo’s too.
PRICE – 1.20 Kids Portion 1.50 Adults
TOILET – YES
SEATING – There are two rooms to this parlor and lots of tables. The outdoor area is shaded and decked with additional chairs and tables
PLAY AREA – There is a box of toys inside and the courtyard is set back from the road and sidewalk so its perfect for small children to play safely in.
Well that concludes my current guide, like I said before Ice Cream is a contentious issue so your feedback and contributions are vital. Plus I want so more places to check out!
